Koloa Mill

Koloa Mill by Bill Braden, Oil

Comments:

This view of the old Koloa Mill is from the road connecting Koloa town and the eastern  side of Poipu, Kauai. The still intact smokestack of the sugar mill is now dormant, probably extinct. "Black Mountain" behind, looks like it's billowing instead. The real name is Ha'upu Mountain, meaning to recall or remember. Appropriately the original oil on canvas was a gift to the last Wilcox descendant CEO of the sugar plantation commissioned by his daughter and son-in-law. George Wilcox, his forefather, was the Prime Minister of Hawaii's last monarch Queen Liliuokalani. In the foreground, the rich red soil of what is now Grove Farm lays fallow for now. It's the red of Hawaiian Royalty.
