"NSCLT Pipeline"
This is the fourth image commissioned by North Shore Community Land Trust, N.S.C.L.T., for use in their / our campaign to preserve this world famous view, the view from the most famous wave in the world, the Banzai Pipeline. It was also used as note cards (thank you notes for donors, invitations to fundraisers, gifts, etc.) and tee shirts (by Patagonia for awareness raising memorabilia gifts to participants). After all, how can you create a series on the North Shore without including “ the Pipe”? Maybe what is notable about this painting is that it is a “reefscape” rather than a wave painting. It is this reefscape/ landscape emphasis as opposed to the surfer’s obsession with the wave that makes this a distinctive piece. The artist hasn’t risked his life trying to surf “the Pipe” since high school days 30+ years ago! What also makes this particular depiction of “the Pipe” so disorienting to surfers (aside from it not being a surfer’s typical “wave painting”) is that the man made objects have not been included. When Bill was commissioned to paint “the Best Beaches of Hawaii” for the City and County, the Arts Commissioners specified that no man made structures be included. What that did was to create a more classic, less dated, the “way it once was and one day will be again” look. For surfers who rely on specific houses for triangulating their exact location, those houses whatever the quality of architecture are a matter of life and being caught too far inside the impact zone!
Again, this work is part of P.O.S.S.E. (Protect Our Surf Sites and Environment) project, developed with Surfrider Oahu Chapter members: Pete and Sally Cole, Scott Werney, Doug Rodman, Marvin Haskett, Leslie Poland, Pam DaGrossa, Stuart Coleman, Dean Otsuki, Surfrider Foundation National Director, Jim Moriarty, and ex E. D. Chris Evans.
