From the overlook on the far end of Kalaupapa peninsula is this view of the - Highest Sea Cliff in the World.  Before modern effective treatment of leprosy (Hansen’s Disease) was developed, those afflicted were left to basically fend for themselves at this remote location.  These cliffs were the walls that isolated the inhabitants. Kaluapapa is a most extraordinary place, even for Hawaii- arguably the most geologically remote location on earth The isolation here is not limited to humans, these cliffs are habitat to rare plants that only grow here such as the loulu hewa.
