“Sandbar Solitude”

by Bill Braden

This is the view from the Sandbar in Kaneohe Bay looking back toward Oahu’s Koolau Mountain Range.  The Pali (the cliffs) are spectacular as are the uniquely wonderful waters of this sacred place.  The sand that always covers this coral outcropping slopes rather quickly to deeper waters, creating a transition of color from light green to deep blue. Though there is only dry sand at low tide, visits here at high tide affords one that mystical experience of walking in ankle deep water in the middle of the largest body of protected water in the State of Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay.  This protection, a result of the barrier reef beyond and the mile or so distance from the shore that lets you get away from the bustle of Oahu presents many opportunities.  The water is almost always clear due to its proximity to open ocean, yet it is safe from waves and generally placid due to its leeward location. Again, because of its relative isolation and nearness to deep water, rays, turtles, even large sharks frequent this spot.  The magic really transforms on weekends and holidays when this spot is invaded by thongs, throngs and thumpings of humans and their watercraft that transport them here.

The Hawaiian name for this place Ahu o Laka means Altar of Laka.  I’ve been told two stories about Laka, one that Laka was a chief who died and was buried here, the other is that Laka was an immortal connected to hula, dance.  One thing I know is the place makes you want to swim and dance!
