“Pele’s Followers” Ke Iki Beach, North Shore
by Bill Braden
This work was commissioned by the manager of a small beachside hotel on Oahu’s North Shore, Ke Iki Beach Bungalows. We have coconut trees, deserted white sand beach, and turquoise to deep blue waters of a quintessential Hawaiian beach. Also we have the amenities of a fresh shower and shaded picnic table here. Looking toward Kaena Point, we have the rocks known as “Pele’s Followers.” The legend is that Pele, the volcano goddess, while traveling along shore saw mortal Hawaiians and taking pity for their short life spans, immortalized them into permanent stones.
