“Haleiwa Canoes” North Shore Oahu

By Bill Braden

The original of this image was painted with dry pastel chalk.  Portrayed is the beach at Haleiwa by Surf and Sea Store, across the street from Jameson’s By the Sea Restaurant.  In addition to the Kaena Point landmark in the background is the stone breakwater of Haleiwa Harbor.  This is the home of the North Shore canoe clubs, and you can see a six-person outrigger canoe in the midground.  In the foreground is a mother and son preparing to go out on the smaller red canoe.  The son dutifully carries the paddles and mom has a ripe pineapple – a non native, exotic fruit that in by gone times of great sailing ships was a symbol of welcome and prosperity.  The pineapple was once practically an icon of Hawaii.  Not anymore, but it will always be a nice bright color to highlight up the foreground in artwork.
