“North Beach/ Mokapu Triptych”

By Bill Braden

This triptych is of the view form the edge of the tee off green at the Signature Hole (#13) of the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course. The beach known as “North Beach” is probably the best surf spot on Windward Oahu, but only those who have US military benefits can enjoy this beach. They are the envy of all local surfers who are not connected. The left panel show “Pyramid Rock” and its namesake beach. On this day only Kualoa ridge is illuminated while the Koolau mountains are in the clouds. The historic and spiritual significance of this place Mokapu is too much to explain in this writing. The whole area was reserved for Hawaiian royalty even before King Kamehameha’s reign . It was he who renamed this place Moku Kapu (small island or peninsula and sacred place). It was later shorten to Mokapu. It is an apt name for a scared place now guarded by the U S Marine Corp. The right panel shows Ulupau head and Moku Manu, the later is guarded by hammer head and tiger sharks. Maybe Mo Kapu is Mo Bettah.
