at 14’ by 22’, this is the largest stretched canvas painting
in the state of Hawaii. Bill was contracted by Art Group International
of Santa Monica California for this work in 1988.

Back
in Mayor Fasi’s administration, the Mayor’s Office of Culture
and the Arts’ had a director, Elaine Murphy, who was an artist
as well as a civil servant. She made sure the city complied with the
legal mandate that ½% of construction costs of City projects
be spent on public art. She even went as far as to make sure the art
selection process included the very best possible.
Calls for artists
and proposals went nationwide for art to decorate the lobby of Harbor
Village, a city owned and built apartment building. In 1990, Bill was
selected from over 200 applicants to paint these works titled “The
Best Beaches of Hawaii.” He was also a semi finalist on two
other city projects, but those projects were cancelled before the finalists
were chosen. Even the “Best Beaches of Hawaii” project was
to be cancelled due to some kind of bureaucratic political fiasco during
a mayoral transition.
Bill was able to
prevail with politicking and perseverance. On a more artistic note,
the selection of which beaches would represent the “Best Beaches
of Hawaii” was made by the Art Commissioners of the City and County
of Honolulu. Mr. David Stringer, the architect of Harbor Village and
Chairman of the Commission designed the concept to create windows with
the paintings in an otherwise windowless lobby.

This is an arched

Fleet
Street Graphics:
The owner of this
business creates huge graphics for sides of buses and other commercial
purposes (billboards are illegal in Hawaii). He chose the “Hanauma
Bay from “The Best Beaches of Hawaii” series for their office,
to showcase their abilities.
